OSEA Field Study Abroad Programs in Mexico

OSEA Resources

OSEA seek to develop an extensive array of academic resources for students. Please contact us if you have suggestions for improving and adding to our collection to assist students in their educational development. Thank you!

OSEA Partners: UIMQRoo

The Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana, Roo or UIMQRoo is OSEA institutional Partner in Mexico in creating a unique international student exchange program based in anthropological Field Study Abroad. UIMQRoo, located in Jose Maria Morelos Quintana Roo, México, provides transcripting authority for OSEA with accredited transcripts of the OSEA course credits and anthropological training you receive. Every summer OSEA students participate in the OSEA intensive training with Maya undergraduate student from the UIMQRoo. They are native Maya speakers and students learning how to do community based research with their home towns. This provides a unique opportunity of transcultural exchange, linguistic immersion, and fieldwork based learning.

OSEA Partners: LAII-UNM

Latin American and Iberian Institute (University New Mexico) is an OSEA institutional partner in the USA. This partnership allows eligible students to apply for a FLAS grant at the LAII-UNM and have their grant support their participation in the OSEA Maya language immersion program. The Latin American & Iberian Institute at University of New Mexico (LAIL–UNM) (www.laii.unm.edu) is a recipient of a U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant (2022-2026) and is able to distribute FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships to students learning Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) and Indigenous Languages of the Americas, including Maya. Beginning in 2023, LAIL–UNM is partnering with OSEA to create a unique opportunity for UNM as well as non-UNM students to participate in the OSEA Maya immersion program. Interested persons are encouraged to contact the OSEA Director (quetzil at osea-cite dot org) or the LAIL-UNM administrative staff (laiibusiness@unm.edu) to learn about eligibility and funding.

Learn about opportunities for a FLAS Fellowship at the LAII website. Submission deadlines vary each year but fall in the 3rd week of February as a rule of thumb. https://laii.unm.edu/funding/summerflas-fellowship.html
