In designated Programs, OSEA offers a limited number of Work Exchange
Assistantships for graduate students and on rare occasions to undergraduates.
Students make a separate and additional application for these positions.
There is no additional application fee to submit with the application.
The regularly published application fees are applicable and must be
submitted in order to be considered.
The Work Exchange Assistantships are based on a set amount of hours
of work a week in the areas of teaching and research. The specific assignments
are determined by the OSEA staff on site. Assistants are considered
ancillary staff. They are required to participate in all seminars and
normally scheduled educational and group activities. Staff have the
choice of participating in any optional educational excursions at the
additional cost that is established for the specific program. Assistantship
positions are available for the Summer Field School, the Winter Quarter,
and the Spring Semester.
Applicants should note that the amount of time spent in work exchange
will significantly effect their ability to conduct independent research.
Applicants should be aware that the obligations of the position will
in most cases eliminate the possibility of doing independent research.
The use of research materials gathered as an Assistant is limited and
must be defined through a written agreement provided by OSEA, which
retains rights over any such material. In certain limited and applicable
cases, the research materials may lead to publications in which the
Research Assistant may be given the opportunity to participate as a
junior author at the prerogative of OSEA.
The work exchange is defined as 20 hours a week. Half Assistantship
positions might be offered at the discretion of the OSEA Directors.
Undergraduate Assistantships are limited to half and quarter time and
to research and administrative activities. Undergraduates who are interested
in assistantships need to contact OSEA directly and in advance of their
application.
The value of the work assistants provide OSEA is exchanged as a deduction
from the tuition. All persons who apply for an assistantship must also
submit the full application fee according to the published schedule
in order to be considered.
The Work Exchange Assistantship positions do not include international
airfare, travel costs of ground transportation to the location of the
OSEA Program, cost of Home-Stays, Activities Fee, books, research materials,
and any optional educational excursions.
