Electronic Course Reserve and Program Materials

Supplies: Required Software

You must invest in the purchase of ACDSee PhotoManager. The current version is 14 or 15 for $69. This is well worth investment to manage your photographic digital images long into the future. However you may be able to locate previous versions for half the price -- say $30-- at www.download.com or similar. Only later versions are available for MAC. There are other software programs that do image management, this do not have the capabilities that you are required to have for participation in the OSEA program.

Note-Taking / Field Notes
As of 2011 OSEA is no longer requiring the use of SIL FieldWorks software program. This software is free to download. However, if you are confident about your ethnographic interests and future then we recommend dowloading this softward and playing around with it in order to have some familiarity with its basic operation. You may decide to use this in the long run.
The main difficulty is that there is as of yet no MAC version of this program. Thus, we are maintaining a WORD based electronic note-taking system. One-Note on MS Office is likely to be our next software move.

Required for Image Editing and Processing
It is highly reocmmended that you purchase through your university a high quality, powerful graphic image software program such as Photoshop. As a student you are likely to have access to very good pricing for this and many other software programs. In addition to image manipulation you will also need to have a program to manage image files, that is not only to view images in folders but to sort, quickly copy, create thumbnails, input metadata, manage albums, etc.

There are several free options such as Picaso. Adobe has Photoshop Lightroom as an add-on, but it is also packaged in the Design bundle. ACDSee has a powerful and effective set of programs ranging from basic to professional.

Where to Buy Software
See if you can locate discounted software from Ebay if your university does not have competitive student pricing. For example Indiana University allows students to purchase the Adobe Design bundle of photoshop, dreamweaver, lightroom, photoshop elements, flash, acrobat professional and more for $25. Make sure you do a thorough search from your university. Sometimes however, especially for computer accessories bestbuy, ebay, and similar have better prices.

A variety of software can be found at www.download.com that can be of assistance for this summer.
