NAPA Tourism Workshop / AAA

tim wallace and quetzil castañeda, organizers

Tim and Quetzil met in 2001 at the AAA and found a common interest in the anthropology of tourism, among other topics (see below). They initiated what has become a long term collaboration in organizing and leading the NAPA sponsored workshop on tourism. The workshop was conceived as a forum to think about and discuss new directions in theory, methods, and research problems in the anthropology of tourism. For a few years now we have thought is wise to write up a little article or polemic on this topic. Perhaps we will soon. In the meantime we have created this web site as a point of departure for networking among those who have participated in the workshop. It is a resource that should grow and link up with those involved in the Tourism Interest Group of the Society for Applied Anthropology that Tim, Quetzil, Luis Vivanco, Amanda Stronza, and others initiated at the 2007 meetings.

In addition to training students in his Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, based field school, Tim is writing an ethnography of tourism development among the Mayan communities of the lake. Tim was elected president of NAPA (to start 2008) and

During the academic calendar, Quetzil has been teaching Maya (Yucatec Maya language) and Latin American Studies at Indiana University. In addition to running a field school in Yucatán, Quetzil has recently been writing about heritage and ethnography of archaeology.
