a portable (walkman sized) tape recorder is required of all participants
the Sony Walkman Professional Recording series is strongly
recommended; it includes an excellent stereo lapel style microphone.
Price range $280-300. Supplement with a cheaper ($50-60) recorder
with built in speaker. If the first is out of price range, then
make sure that an effective (and compatible) microphone is purchased
from an electronics store for under $100. Professional research
requires professional equipment: cheap recording devices will sabotage
research. Do not use microcassettes or micro recorders.
Purchase a small, earplug-style earphone system to go with taping
system in addition to built in speaker.
A small carrying bag that can be comfortably worn at all times
on belt or body to carry tape recorder, extra batteries, 1-3 cassettes,
and microphone.
a laptop computer if possible, w/ all necessary accoutrements
including adapters, especially for the recharger and 3-prong to
2 prong male electrical adapters. Please ensure that you have Word.
Mac laptop users please ensure that you can save files in these
Word formats. (there is no regular email or web access in Pisté.)
A set of 10 floppy disks for moving data and back up is also strongly
recommended.
Photographic camera system (strongly recommended for all participants).
Ideally a quality 35mm camera with a set of lenses or if not then
a versatile zoom with range from 20s to 80s minimum. A macro lense
is very useful some research projects along with flash and tripod
system. You will not be shooting Field School research photo-documentation
without a quality camera.
If a photographic camera is not available, a digital camera is
also a big plus.
If available a Digital Video camcorder is also a valuable contribution
to bring for the summer.
Make sure that a long lasting battery is brought with recharger/adapter,
and optional 2nd back up battery.
Research Materials
It is suggested that the Required Readings, especially the books, are
brought with you as a resource. However, there are copies of most of
both the required and recommended readings. Thus, depending upon your
personal attitudes towards keeping books with you to reread and note-taking
habits, you could rely upon the library resources. Certain items are
reference resources that depending upon your specific work might be
necessary to bring so that you have your own copy. If you have questions
on this issue, we can provide more specific suggestions.
