ELECTRICITY AND ADAPTERS
Mexican electricity is the same as the USA. The main issue is
that most homes and public places are wired with only two prong outlets
and are therefore not grounded. Virtually all of the USA appliances
are three pronged including our laptops. Thus, you should bring a two
to three prong adapter-converter for your laptop and for any other appliances
that you might need -- hairdryers, coffee makers, etc. For your homestay
computer use, we recommend that you bring your own standard protected
outlet with six plugs (approx $8-15). Both adapters and protected outlets
are available in Mexico, but save yourself the need to go shopping for
this. While 2-to-3 prong adapters are cheap, protected outlets can be
twice US price.
COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY
OSEA has
three laptops and a desktop for use during Training Program. These
are IBM TP 600s and TP390s. They are Pentium II with USB ports. We
have Zip Drives for 100 meg zip disks. There is a CD burner on a desktop.
There will be at least one available flatbed scanner. We have two
or three printers available for group use. One of these is color inkjet.
Paper for printing OSEA related materials is available free of charge.
SOFTWARE: Computers are loaded with Win98 and Word 2000; we also have
the entire Microsoft Office Suite. For Image work we use photoshop
5 and Lview Pro 2.85 (also earlier versions). We have Norton 2000
System Tools for technical support and maintenance. We have Acrobat
Reader v4. All original research materials based in computer media
remain in possession of OSEA for archiving; thus, each student will
need to arrange for their own copies of materials.
AUDIO VISUAL SUPPORT
OSEA has one Hi-8
camcorder, a TV-VCR unit, and an additional VCR for copying research
materials tape to tape. OSEA does not supply digital photographic
nor audio-visual cameras or support. We ask that you bring your own
digital camera and digital camcorder for your research, fieldwork,
and seminars, if these are available to you.
